Enugu, Nigeria – February 2025 – The AfricaPlan Foundation’s inaugural Upskill Program, an intensive six-week web development training initiative, successfully concluded this February, graduating its first cohort of aspiring developers. The program, designed to equip young Nigerians with foundational skills for careers in web development, focused on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, providing participants with proficiency in these core technologies.

The program’s comprehensive curriculum combined theoretical instruction with hands-on learning through practical projects. Participants gained real-world experience building websites and web applications, preparing them for the challenges of the tech industry. The program’s “learn-by-doing” approach ensured participants developed both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for success.
“This program was born out of a need we identified during the HackathonAfrica program recruitment, where many applicants struggled with the basics of web development. The goal of this project is twofold: to provide a solid foundation in web development for budding developers and to create a talent pipeline for our HackathonAfrica programs” said Jonah Onah, Project Coordinator, HackathonAfrica Academy.
The Upskill Program aims to bridge the skills gap for young Nigerians by providing accessible and high-quality training. The program’s success in its first iteration, with 20 participants graduating, demonstrates the strong demand for such initiatives and reinforces the importance of investing in tech literacy. 99% of graduates reported increased confidence in their web development abilities.
Speaking on her experience, Favour Ahamefula, a program graduate said “I am grateful to the AfricaPlan Foundation for the opportunity to participate in the Upskill Program, where I gained valuable skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I appreciate the inclusive and supportive learning environment and the patience of the tutors, who ensured we understood each language thoroughly. I also want to thank my cohort for their support, knowledge-sharing, and guidance in navigating challenges. The experience was truly amazing, and I am committed to building on what I have learned to maximize this opportunity.“

The AfricaPlan Foundation, dedicated to empowering African youth through technology literacy, plans to run three sessions of the Upskill Program annually, expanding its curriculum and reach to empower even more aspiring developers.
